About Texas Tech University

Texas Tech University, also referred to as simply TTU, is a public, coeducational, research university in Lubbock, also known as `Hub City`, which is the county seat of Lubbock County, in the US state of Texas, with a population estimated at a number of more than 199 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census, fact which makes it the 11th largest city in the state and the 87th largest city in USA.

TTU was established in February, 1923, originally being known as Texas Technological College, adopting its current name in June, 1969, when all of the institution's schools, except Law, became colleges, the name changing being approved by the state legislature. Today, TTU is recognized as the leading institution of the Texas Tech University System, and it has the 6th largest student body in the state, having an enrollment of approximately 30 000 students.

The university offers degrees in more than 150 courses of study through 13 colleges and hosts 60 research centers and institutes, the Carnegie Foundation classifying it as having `high research activity`, among the most prominent research projects at the university being in areas such as epidemiology, nanophotonics, wind energy, pulsed power and grid computing.

Over the years, many of the university's academic divisions have been highly ranked by various significant publications, including U.S. News & World Report, which, in 2010, ranked the Whitacre College of Engineering 76th in the nation, and Business Week, which ranked the Rawls College of Business, 36th best among approximately 800 U.S. public business schools.

Athletics

TTU's athletic teams are known as the Texas Tech Red Raiders, who compete in NCAA Division I, in various sports, for both men and women, including in basketball, baseball and football. Of all the university's varsity sports, the women's basketball team has been the only one to claim a national title, winning the 1993 NCAA Women's Basketball Championship. The men's basketball team has also contributed to the university's athletic fame, having made 14 appearances in the NCAA Men's Division I Tournament, the football team also being one of TTU's strongest sports, in each of the last 14 seasons, the team finishing with a winning record, the fourth-longest such streak in the nation.
